It would seem that the Vatican has decided to fire their chief astronomer simply because he thinks that evolution is how life as we know it formed on Earth. Is this the work of a sane organisation or one trying to stick it’s head into the proverbial sand?
Creation/Intelligent Design vs. Evolution is certainly on going debate. On one side you have science and a fair mountain of evidence against fundamentalist religion and some old text. Logically, of course, you have to side with evolution but that doesn’t stop certain people going with the old text.
The Vatican’s actions do keep with their dubious track record, though, so it’s not exactly a surprise. Back in the day, they refused to accept any of the following:
- That the Earth, despite sound scientific reasoning, was round.
- That the Earth, despite sound scientific reasoning, orbitted around the sun.
- They also refused to accept that the Bible should be translated into English and even had a few people killed over that one.
This action continues that trend – instead of listening to a guy who obviously knows what he’s talking about … well, they fire him, stick their fingers in their ears and start going “La la la la la la la la, I can’t hear you!”Therefore, it’s pretty safe to say that the Vatican really aren’t any sort of scientific authority by any measure – instead of going with available evidence, they decide to side with the ID theory which, strictly speaking, doesn’t even meet the scientific requirements for being a theory (it’s only a basic hypothesis, an unprovable one at that).
Good ol’ organised religion, ever the bastion of ignorance.
