Hiding knowledge is truly a crime

Any effort to hide or suppress knowledge of any sort is a horrible act, barring truly special circumstances.  To hide knowledge and thus keep society ignorant on nearly any topic is bizarre, idiotic and outright monstrous.  So then, why of all things, do certain religions keep trying to hide out certain pieces of information?
